Matthew 6: 34 (NIV)
“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.*
Some of you, like me, remember a time in your youth when you obsessed and stressed over how fat you were. When you see pictures of yourself from those days, you feel like slapping the young you. “What was I thinking?” we ask ourselves. NOW we’re fat, while the best days of our (skinny) lives were overshadowed by our delusions of obesity.

Jesus knew all about humanity’s tendency to ruin today. He didn’t just preach about how to be good and obedient children; he spoke lovingly of how we could lead more joyful lives. Live in the now, Jesus says. Today’s strength is sufficient for today’s problems but it is not enough for today and tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow might turn out to be a bad day – maybe worse than today.  But if today is a “skinny” day, you have missed your chance to savor it because you were worrying about being fat tomorrow. Maybe you will be skinny two days in a row – but worrying about it will not be what held the fat at bay.

Jesus doesn’t intend for us to lead lives that include no plans for tomorrow; he just doesn’t want worry about the future to rob the present of its joy. The Christian life will always present challenges, but worry produces no solutions and no peace of mind. Prayer, planning, and preparation enable us to prevail today and tomorrow. Joy and solutions go hand-in-hand in a worry-free life.
Nothing is changed by worry except the worrier!*
