One day, my husband and I were preparing to go out. I
was heading for the door when I asked, “Are you ready?” He said, “Yes.” But
when I turned around, I saw that he was still putting his shoes on. Are you
really ready to go if you don’t have your shoes on?
In this verse and the others around it, Paul paints a word
picture of the preparations a Christian soldier must make before going forth
into spiritual battle. We see that
readiness requires us to put on our armor: belt of truth, breastplate of
righteousness; shield of faith; helmet of salvation; and the sword of the Spirit.
But we are not fully prepared for war until we are properly shod. It is ironic,
isn’t it, that the final step in our readiness for battle
comes from the gospel of peace?
The Christian engages in spiritual warfare every day. Paul’s
military analogy is an apt description of what we face and how we face it. But
for all our weapons and armor, we must walk in peace. We are protected and
armed but we don’t attack. The Christian soldier puts on his gospel shoes and marches
out to offer peace.
